Georgia Tourism and Other Great Links
One of the thirteen original colonies that formed the United States, Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi
River in terms of land area and ranks ninth in population in the nation. Georgia is also one of the fastest growing states.
Yet, when it comes to tourism in the United States, though many people around the world know about Orlando with its theme
parks and the Florida beaches, few are aware that the State of Georgia, just to the north of Florida, also offers wonderful
opportunities for tourists. Even most Americans do not realize what Georgia offers.
Of course, many know of Atlanta, site of the 1996 Olympics and a major transportation and business hub in the Southeast
United States. The state can also be justifiably proud of the beauty of its seacoast and mountains -- tourist destinations
sure to delight. The coastline on the Atlantic Ocean features the historic port city of Savannah and its beaches, St. Simons
Island, Jekyll Island, and Cumberland Island.
The North Georgia Mountains are part of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains. The southern terminus of the
famous Appalachian Trail begins near Amicalola Falls. Great mountain towns to visit include Ellijay, Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Hiawassee, and Helen. The mountains of North Georgia are similar to those of North Carolina, the state just to the north, but the Georgia mountains are more quickly accessed via Atlanta's international airport and major highways.
